They were com­ing home.

They were com­ing home to us,
where we were wait­ing
so proudly and assuredly.

Rid­ing a comet
and smil­ing, some­times laugh­ing,
their human­ness sud­denly struck
a chord deep within us
as tragedy began to unfold,
seem­ingly with­out their knowing.

And then
as we watched the skies in des­per­a­tion,
in a sin­gle breath out
they flew higher
than they had ever flown before,
and our lives came crash­ing down,
changed forever.
